I know nothing about chickens other than what I've observed since moving to the Big Island 2 years ago.
My landlord lets me feed his chickens. I buy the seed and scatter it for them under my covered parking spot, where I sit to read and write. It's relaxing and I've gotten to know a bit about these fascinating creatures.
To make a long story short, one bird refuses to come within 20 feet of me, even when the others are clustering around me. She acts as if the others are invisible, and goes about her business as usual. Is this bird emotionally challenged, or is this an evolutionary leap in which a chicken has finally figured out that people eat them???

Different breeds of chickens behave differently and specific chickens will also behave differently. If you get a domestic breed of chicken and hand raise it, they are extremely tame, they would flap up and sit on your lap given the chance. Some breeds such as the game fowl, leghorns and such are generally more flighty. Here is a link to Henderson's Chicken Comparison Chart which lists many of the different breeds of chicken and mentions which ones are more friendly. Perhaps you will be able to tell what type of chicken your standoffish friend is.

I think that chicken might know that KFC is coming to town.

This bird was one of 10 that came here as "young teenagers". Three are no longer with us (dogs etc.) and out of the surviving 7, this one is unique.
Think about the terror of smelling all of John's delicious notions, knowing what they are, and watching the grinning monster as he tosses a small handfull of seeds to the ignorant flock who look up at him like a great seed god and even hop up on his knee. So she just walks around, playing dumb, disinterested, and keeping her distance; ready to bolt if the monster gets close. The horror... The horror...

John, you are confusing roosters with hens. Nine out of ten roosters should be eaten while they are still at the young and tender age. Hens, now, those you want to keep around for four or five years. Then you can make them into some really nice soup but they won't be tender. Very flavorful, not tender.
I don't think chickens care if you eat chicken, heck, they will eat chicken, too. Toss a chunk of KFC out there and the fastest one will zoom in, grab it and run off cackling in glee with the rest of the flock following in hot pursuit. Our girls watch us through the kitchen window as we prepare roosters for freezer camp and they are much more aware of the eggs being made into omelets than the roosters being made into soup.

Centipede -
You could have saved the three by eating the dogs.

Damon, I'm saving the dogs for a disaster menu - see separate thread.
All joking aside, I'm extremely interested in knowing why this one bird keeps her distance.

Hotzcatz says "Then you can make them into some really nice soup but they won't be tender. Very flavorful, not tender." Not tender indeed. We tried making something other than soup and it was so bad even the cats wouldn't eat it. Better to stick with soup.
