I have one last test to take to transfer my teaching license to Hawaii and there are no more spaces left for the test in Hilo, so I have to go to Kahului, Maui to take it at the community college. The test is at 7:30 am on a Saturday so I need to stay overnight the night before, I can't risk a transportation screw up making me miss it so I really do need to be there the night before.
It is right around our 20th anniversary so I am hoping my husband will come with me for two nights, and we could have a mini vacation in Maui. We can't afford a fancy expensive hotel, is there anyplace like the Hotel Manago over there? You know, someplace cheap, clean, and comfortable but no frills. Cheap is important but I don't want to be dealing with iceheads in the parking lot, I need to be well rested for this test.

I would suggest going thru vrbo.com and getting a vacation rental or, looking for a bed and breakfast.

Sorry, but rooms that start at $699 and go up to $1099 per night are not what I call affordable. Two weeks salary for two nights is just not doable for a school teacher working in Hawaii. Must be nice to be in that position, but we sure aren't. I need to stay somewhere affordable for at least one night because I HAVE to take this test and I have to go off island to do it. If I could find a good deal I would like to bring my husband so we could be together to celebrate our anniversary, but the Ritz isn't going to make it for us. I checked the VRBO listings first, but they all want 1 week stays or are booked up.
Again, my question is: does anyone know of an AFFORDABLE place to stay on Maui for one or two nights?

I use Priceline.com a lot to bid on rooms and have been able to get very nice, name hotels for the price of backwater places.
Try bidding on a three star or four star hotel on Maui. You can select an area on Maui but if your bid is accepted your purchase is set.
My wife had to go to Kona the other day and I got her a room at the Royal Kona Resort for $70. Regular kamaaina rate is $125. I think. I've stayed at the Hawaiian Price in Waikiki for the same price. On Maui I've stayed at a nice resort (Makena?) for about that price too.
Assume the best and ask questions.

We stayed at Lahaina Shores, ocean front, went through VRBO.com and got it for around $140 a night. It was nice and we love Lahaina.

A point... The Maui Seaside is cheapest and just down the street from the Community College, whereas a couple of the other suggested places are in West Hawaii. The Seasides are very basic places to stay -- nothing fancy. Traffic issues could be a real problem for the West Hawaii hotels if there's an accident on the Pali! Staying in the Kihei area would be a safe and enjoyable alternative to the Seasides as the beach is much more pleasant. It'd be only about 1/2 hour drive into Kahului on an early Saturday morning.
