I recently tried the ice cream bean fruit at the Volcano farmers market and liked it. The green fuzzy pods were about 8" in length with cottony textured delicious sweet white fruits covering a black seed, about 8 seeds/fruits per pod
. I searched on youtube and found a similar but much larger fruit with a more shiny green pod and more seeds/fruits. The fruit is from the Cuenca Ecuador area (el. 8000'). If you search youtube for "guaba fruit" it is the first video result. Can anyone tell me where to find this fruit on the island? If it is grown here? Thanks.

Don't have an answer to your question, but thought you should know that mature Ice Cream Bean trees are quite lrge. You'll need a big yard if you want to plant one.

I have read that they get quite large which shouldn.t be a problem. Do you know if they have to be picked or do they fall from the tree when ripe?

The Ice Cream Bean is reall Inga Edulis. The plant is available at many nurseries. Before you purchase and plant one, ask the nurseryman...they are extremely invasive. The root structure really tore up my lawn. Much better in another person's garden...just my opinion.

The mature pods will fall, but the tasty stage (with the cotton candy stuff) is while they are immature and thus must be picked before they fall.
We recently had three ice cream bean trees cut (on makai side of Pahoa)-- they were ~20 years old and about 50' tall.
There are lots of seedlings under where ours were standing, easy to get to -- email me if you want some.

Like DOMinpuna says, they surface root and where the roots get barked by the mower more trees sprout.

I spend a lot of time picking up the beans from the ground, because the seeds sprout with no difficulty and create lots of weeding work. However, it is a nice tree for shade, with a dense canopy. It also responds well to heavy pruning. I work around the problems, but if I had known when I planted it what its habits are I would never have it in my garden.

Radiopeg, a friend of mine has a fruiting Ice Cream Bean tree in Eden Roc at 1800', so it should do fine.
