Dentists taking new patients
#1
Does anyone know if there are any dentists in the Hilo area taking new patients? I have an emergency with a tooth (either a cavity or needs a root canal) but my regular dentist can't fit me in for at least 6 weeks. I'm on emergency call with him (in case someone cancels but its been 2 weeks now with still no openings). I've called around town and every dentist I've called has said they aren't taking any new patients and if the pain was bad to go to the emergency room. But all they would do is pull the tooth and I would like to have the option of keeping it!

Very sorry to hear about your discomfort and hope you find relief soon. Unfortunately our area does not offer many options, not sure why? Dr Cris Igawa across from hilo shopping center is probably taking new patients(if he is not on the golf course),he takes cash only I think. I have trusted him a few times over the last few years, he never shakes, has good eyes, and is always professional. Although I do miss Dr Layman and his ways now that he is gone.

Try Dr. Kobayashi on Ponohawai near the fire station

Thank You... But just found someone who can get me in today at noon...at Kuhio Dental. And they take my insurance to boot!

Glad you found some help! I held off making this comment until you had some relief in prospect, but now that you do, here goes. You should seriously consider dropping any medical professional who couldn't find a way to deal with what had to be significant discomfort in less than six weeks. Just sayin'.

I agree. Although what I found out today about my tooth wouldn't have helped my situation with my "permanent" dentist. I need a root canal on the tooth and my family dentist doesn't do root canals. The place I went to today "does" do root canals but the next available opening to have it done is 10 days from now! So they gave me a prescription for antibiotics until they can do the work. That and a lot of wine will hopefully get me through this. Although I'm still gonna try and find someone who can do it sooner...even if its over in Kona

I have had several root canals done by Dr. Brian Sakamoto, an endodontist in Hilo. I have long twisty roots and he has been the best endodontist I've ever had, and I have several others to compare him to. Root canals are rough, you really want someone who knows what they are doing.

Everyone I know who's gone to Kuhio dentists comes out needing a root canal or crown. I'd suggest you get a second opinion before having any work done. Try Dr. Nii

FYI. I made an appointment with an endodontist in Portland Oregon next week for the root canal since I'll be there visiting family and no one here in Hilo is willing to do an emergency root canal unless I have a referal and then wait until their schedule can fit me in ....which is at least 10 days!.

It's just amazing about Portland. There must be 1000 dentists in that city! It was so easy to make an appointment. They got my insurance information to make sure everything's covered....They got flight information to make sure there aren't any delays in route and if there are...they would adjust accordingly. And they do root canals using lasers and crowns are made the same day with 3D printers! Welcome to the real world of medical care.
