Didn't feel like biking over there. What's Lyft? In addition to improving public transportation and other 4 wheel options, safer, more accessible lanes for bikes /motorbikes would be helpful. Visitors from Europe are somewhat shocked by our dependency on the automobile.

i would like to see sections of Hwy 11 between Mtn View and Volcano widened to 2 lanes to allow slower traffic to stay right. So often trucks or tourists are slow to go up or down the hill, which results in a long row of traffic. And long rows of traffic are problematic create their own traffic problems.
I would like to see all the busses operational again, and an app that allows you to track them. I've been left hanging for over an hour by late busses. Not cool.

The County Council in 2015 approved $500,000 for a consultant to create a mass transit master plan. The consultant, SSFM, should begin on-board rider surveys next week, Kai said. After that, there will be community meetings for more public input. There is currently a fleet of 55 buses serving the entire island. Besides incorporating the county buses, the intent of the new system is to also enable future linkage to taxi and bike share services, according to the request for proposals. Vendors are asked to create a live map across iPhone, Android and mobile web applications to the administration and bus riders with a real-time experience. This means a user gets a smooth visual of a bus moving on a familiar Google or Apple map along with extremely accurate reporting and arrival estimates. Proposals are due March 14 [2017]. $500,000 for a plan and then request bids to develop an app for something that has been done in Washington State since 2003.

bus riders with a real-time experience.
Don't the buses follow a route schedule? The $500,000 study will, if implemented, let riders at the bus stop know they'll be picked up 53 seconds later than the schedule says?

Easier to spend that $500k to tell people the bus is late than to fix the busses and keep them on schedule.
Easier to tell people to take lyft/uber than to have affordable reliable public transportation. Looks like the private sector is solving the public's problems at a great profit!

Perfect bananahead - great post.
Do not know jen r or her birth papa but any one on drugs whose mind is cloudy should not be trying to push uber/lyft on the population as a solution to the substandard hwy situation . The light at the 2 kalanis is only 3 seconds ,try fix that . Make Steinbeck hwy wider and repave and double wide the lane going up the mtn. Same with Hwy 11 from kam school to above glenwood, double wide going up mtn and synchronize the lights. Getting caught in the kea'au crawl either towards pahoa or towards Mtn View is a night mare .Be it morning or afternoon or accident. Our rd in H.A. is 4x4 only with very deep lakes that never drain. Vehicles drown daily. Re-pave rd 8 and widen. Very bad accident at D and 8 last week in H.A. Blind intersection . We have never taken hele on bus and do not plan on it . And uber lyft we would never take . Mrs.Mimosa |
