Ala'ili Road new steam vents
#1
Ala'ili Road is a small subdivision across 130 from Leilani main entrance and a little makai, 20 acre lots, lovely area. Just spoke to home owner there who returned last week from mandatory evacuation and is leaving again due to numerous steam cracks popping up just this week on their property since they returned. One is 45 ft long and growing, a little too close to the house and all the vents are hot enough to burn skin. Says they are popping up all over neighboring lands too.

Then he tells me the worst part is the non-stop very low flying helicopters buzzing over all day every day. He thinks the pilots must be getting $1000's in tips daily to take the risk of flying just above the tree line.

What a nightmare, my heart goes out to all affected.

Just curious, but who tips a pilot?

They are not just a pilot - they are tour guides, who provide narratives and story lines about what they are showing you, also answering questions.

Any back pressure from Fissure 8 plugging up, has to go somewhere - and the most likely place is right back up the channel from where it came from.

I agree leilanidude and told the homeowner the same. I suggested he give it a year, lots of settling going on and in the long run it could be a good thing, a fun feature in the yard given it cools down a bit.

That's what I thought initially, who knows perhaps they pay extra from the start. Anyway the point I was making is some folks are having a very hard time right now and I'm not seeing it in the news. And it would be nice if the helicopters didn't add to severe trauma many have and are experiencing still.

"I suggested he give it a year"

Has this person been a homeowner there a long time ?

There were steam vents in that area for many years but in recent years they had quit emitting steam.

I had a steam vent in my yard in Kapoho when I moved there 18 years ago but it quit about 10 years ago.I probably helped it along by dumping tons of gravel and cinder in the crack. This was 40 years after the Kapoho eruption so it may last longer than a year.

They've been there around 5 yrs and are leaving now because new cracks are opening everyday and they are afraid they'll be in the yard when it happens or one opens up under the house.

My amateur one year projection is how long before things settle down and new cracks stop appearing. And hopefully the temp drops on the steam.

Hopefully they have also reported this to USGS so they can monitor. There have been a few very small quakes along the LERZ as well but nothing major.
