Our state ag people are not the only ones who act too slowly when encountering a new threat to crops. I'm hoping early detection and notification can help us stay on top of the following:
Several news outlets are carrying stories this weekend about a bacterial disease, spread by boring insects, that is having a terrible effect on Florida oranges, statewide. The HLB bacteria causes 'citrus greening', and has put large numbers of infected orchards beyond saving. Both the bacteria and insect originate in China. If anyone sees this type of damage on their backyard trees, please report it right away.
