We went along to this one.
Good crowd with lots of interest and discussion. Key take-home message: changing the nature of government to being transparent in its conduct and accountable to the community for its actions. Issues raised by audience included: emergency response time, telescopes on Mauna Kea, health care, local control of schools, special use permits on conservation areas, alternative energy, home rule re the electric utility. I wanted to go but had to take care of kids instead.
James, can you give a bit more detail? What were some of the response from Steve Sparks and Angel Pilago on the issues mentioned? Punaweb moderator

Rob,
The take-home message was what Angel said was what this election is about: changing the nature of government to being transparent in its conduct and accountable to the community for its actions. ... Of course, both Angel and Steve (as well as Kale who was also present but not so very much in the hot seat) were for whatever is the Puna equivalent of 'Mom and Apple Pie' ...after all, they are candidates ... Seriously, a thread that ran through very much of the discussion was home rule -- the community is being impacted by decisions made elsewhere by someone else in the interest of someone else and the community is looking for whatever and every means available to have more say about what happens in our daily life. ... Better get Steve (who authored this thread) to cover his responses to the details. James Weatherford, Ph.D. 15-1888 Hialoa Hawaiian Paradise Park

Home Rule would appear to be what we called Self Determination.

quote: 'Home rule' is specific to parlance regarding what local government may and may not do according to what the state and federal levels officially, by means of law, so deem. State laws govern whether a local government is or is not. Beyond statutes, there are lots of other means to permit or prohibit what a local jurisdiction does or not, in particular, $!
