Hey, I'm visiting the BI in Decemberfor a few days. Being that I didn't stop in Puna last time I visited(just volcano), I'm making it a point to this time. So, Punatics, a few questions.
What should I definitely stop and see as a tourist, AND as a potential land buyer? I thinking about buying a piece of land in the near future, and I want to know what are neighborhoods I should think about that are still moderately priced, and worth checking out. I'd like to drive though a few on my way to volcano, and spend some time in the towns there as well.
And of course what are some must see spots as a tourist? I'm only on the BI for like 4 days, so I do want to get in some solid time in Puna, but of course want to go to some other parts too like the North Shore.

The tide pools have fantastic snorkeling. The water's calm and you don't have to worry about being carried out to sea. It's an ever-changing experience because of the different tide levels each time you visit. Go to Ning's in Pahoa for the best Thai food anywhere. My daughter had her favorite in Atlanta (supposedly, by many, the best Thai place in the Atlanta area) and when she ate at Ning's, her favorite changed. I've been on many horseback rides but the best one is in Waipio Valley. Most of the time you'll find waterfalls. You'll also experience the trip down into the valley in an van -- about 45% slope. Many people remember that ride more than the horseback ride.

From Hilo, pick up brunch from Lucy's Okazuya, continue up kaumana Dr. to kaumana cave. Enjoy brunch at picnic table in the cool air, then explore the non-tourist cave. Be careful to not bump your head in the cave entrance. Bring several flashlights, it is unlit.

If you like gardens don't miss the Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden - It does have an admission but I think it is well worth it...Just north of Hilo.

Enjoy the rugged coasline and if you are there during a full moon and the sky is clear, a full moon rising is not to be missed!!!

Akatsuka Orchid Garden is one of my favorite places to stop at. Those orchids are beautiful! I also love Lava Tree Park and love to take Red Road going all the way to Kalapana. As to where to nuy, it depends on your budget and the type of property you are considering.

There's some areas in Kalapana Sea View Estates that would fit that description. See the thread on "Your Favorite Subdivision" for more info on that area. There's also a thread that specifically discusses KSVE.

Imagine the great neighbors you would have in Seaview. Wyatt, Rob G and, um, oh yeah, ME!! Perfect views, close to Kapoho & Kehena, remote, clean air.......

Puna is awesome! My husband and I visited in mid-January of this year into early February, and it is truly a magical area! We just moved last month to San Francisco from a rural area near Santa Fe, New Mexico, and hope to be able to come out to the Puna and Hilo areas again for visits! For awhile we were considering relocating to the Big Island, but at this stage of the game it works out better for us to be in San Francisco and come out to the Big Island from time to time. At least it will be easier to do that from here than New Mexico. We spent almost all of our time in the Puna district because we liked it so much - we only got half-way up to the North Shore! The Waipio Valley up there is supposed to absolutely amazing, and we hope to get there the next time we visit!
Anyhow, if you love natural beauty, and simple pleasures, then exploring the Puna district is wonderful. The "red road" can't be beat for just about the most scenic drive ever, and there are lots of places where one can stop and enjoy the ocean views. The warm volcanic pools, Kehena Beach, the town of Pahoa itself, taking a trip to the Volcanoes National Park, going up to Hilo on Wednesdays and Saturdays for their totally wonderful farmers' market, also the Makuu market right near Pahoa on Sundays, are all highly recommended. It's really about tuning into the incredible natural beauty, and of course the wonderful people of the Big Island. The aloha spirit is real, and I will always remember that. We do hope to be out again for visits in the not-too-distant future! ATA direct to Hilo out of Oakland helps in this regard, now that we are back in the Bay Area.
