I believe a taxi costs around $70 to HPP one way so you might be better off paying the $90 per month even if you only need the service once a month.
There are just not enough options to get from the airport to Puna - we have often rented a car to go home and we bring it back the next day with one of us following in our own car. If you can't get a friend to pick you up I think renting for 24 hours is the cheapest solution. This would be a great business for someone - an airport ride service to outlying areas.

It's totally crazy - $90-100 to Seaview. It's 9-10 bucks in gas round trip! Can not help thinking that no bus to the airport has something to do with good profits for the cab companies.

An idea might be to find someone going into town on the day you need to go in. I have driven many neighbors to the airport....
The Keaukaha bus does go BY the airport (it is an easy bus change from the Pahoa bus, at the Mall), if only that bus could add the airport loop it would be GREAT! Anybody got an in with the transportation dept??? ETA: for more answers, maybe this could change out of the Building forum....

quote:I know several cab drivers in Kona, and they all struggle. It's not just the gas, it's the various licensing fees, wear and tear on the car, service on the car, and last but not least, their astronomical insurance cost! Add the hourly rate of $______ for the driver and it's a small profit operation. BTW, it's a PUC regulated industry, their fees have been the same for years and they are lobbying for a raise. I didn't mean cab drivers.I meant the owners of the business.
But it's weird that not a single bus goes to the airport. ___________________________ Whatever you assume, please just ask a question first.

still hope, i agree it is strange that no buses go to the airport in hilo. They go to the kona airport i believe. Also i have 3 neighbors and they are all away on vacation and then there is the vacant houses for sale all around me but thats another topic!

Several years ago - I had my real estate agent promise free airport rides as long as I lived Puna side - to close the deal

If you transport a person for compensation, its considered a Jitney Service, regulated by the PUC.
