Health Care question
#1
Is anybody here get 'health care' through a private carrier? I'm looking for info to get health care for my family once I move to Puna. Once we make the move from Honolulu to Puna. My wife quit her job there, and then we lose our 'health care'!!

Myself, I've got a bad Liver, bad back. Plus add a bad shoulder( rotator Cup) to the mix. But at the same time I'm getting old, so I don't need the insurance as much as my two boys and wife do. But when you have an 8 year old boy,and a ten month old baby boy..they need Health Care without a doubt! My wife needs it too. But being the old "Salt" that I'm am I'll be fine if I have to go with out,but family needs insurance.

So if any of you Puna Residents have private Health Care insurance perhaps you could offer me info?

actually you missed the whole question. Wink I'm asking if anybody is using private insurance company not tied to the state of Hawaii such as Atna ,etc,etc..

I wanna just call and ask how much it would cost to insurance a family of four.

Six years ago I had the best insurance that HMSA offered up to the public. I was paying less than $350 a month back then too Today I pay close to $500.00 a month for an HMO!!!!! But that all comes to an end real quick once I move to the Big Island. I'll need to look for insurance for my family as soon as I get there. This is why I wanted to know if anybody was insured by one of the many private insurance companies out there. I need info/feedback. As for the three you mentioned, their premiums are pretty outragous! But then I guess they all are, right? It's just finding the one with the best small deals.

The people I know who pay their own insurance premiums (i.e. not employer-covered) use Kaiser.

I've had bad experiences with them on the mainland, but the people I know here who use them seem pretty satisfied.

The other benefit to Kaiser is that you should be able to get seen. I have great health insurance, but finding a doctor who will take new patients has been a problem.

Good luck. Health coverage is a challenge here.

You don't seem to have alot of choices, I have also been looking and most private companies do not extend policies to HI. The three that cat listed are about all there is, unless somebody else has found one.

I fully understood the question, Beachboy. HMSA is a private insurance company (BlueShield/BlueCross), although it does provide coverage for a price to the State for their Quest program. HMAA is also private and does the same, as well as Kaiser.

What you may think is that because Hmsa, in particular, provides most of the medical coverage in the state, that it is state run. it is not.
