Strawbales?
#1
Are strawbales available locally or anywhere on the island? I am asking because there may be a way to garden on lava after all!

Nancy - been there and done that. My complaint was that over time, a ton of seeds germinated in the bales. Can't remember what grass the bales were.

Seems to me that I heard that one of the local landfills chipped up organic matter and gave it away for the hauling. Don't know the details like if it is U-Load or where it was. But someone here might know.

The green waste system at the Hilo landfill has a huge chipper that travels between Hilo and Kona and operates at each location for a few weeks. It makes large quantities of high grade much which is free for the hauling. It can be well worth hiring a dump truck to bring in a load for your gardening. Or, for about $160 Harper rental has a 14' dumping flatbed.
Assume the best and ask questions.
