Pahoa Regional Park Advisory Group
#1
Aloha,

I'm looking for anyone interested in joining the Pahoa Regional Park Advisory Group to help facilitate community based planning efforts for the 50+ acres behind the Pahoa Swimming Pool. We have a new council so we may get some movement on this.

Just to recap the points in the Puna CDP which relate to this park and general status.

1. Senior Center: Convert existing fire station into senior center. (Status: in Process)

2. Pool: Repair pump and provide solar heating and heat retaining cover for pool. (Status: Unknown)

3. Art Center and Performance Stage:: (Status: Unknown)

4. Children's Museum and Playground: (Status: Unknown)

5. Skate Park (Status: Complete)

6. Sheltered Picnic Areas: (Status: Unknown)

7. Loop Access Road: Build loop access road to lessen traffic on Main Street (Status: Unknown)

8. Safe Paths: Lighted parking and walking paths linked to Pahoa Village Center

Several groups have plans and projects in mind for the park. If anyone more specific information related to areas covered above, you could please update us.

I talked to Councilmember Blas a few days ago. If there is community will it seems likely he could be an ally in the development of this park.

Anyone wishing to join the Pahoa Regional Park Advisory Group (PRPAG) please give me a call or email.

Maddie Greene will be the contact for the P and R subcommittee of the AC. Not sure what the status is now. There had been talk of movement after the bond float indicated $5M for "Puna" park, as differentiated from one championed by mayor in HPP. I believe there is still outreach to HPP on this. I know Councilman Blas has his own ideas on parks in Puna as well.

My AC term is up soon.

The HPP Board of Directors voted 5-4 not to donate the 20 acres for a park at their meeting last Wednesday. You had to be there to believe how wierd it was.

Voting against were Board President Ron Vizzone, Francis Ganon, Ken McGilvray, Peggy Stevens, and Dale Watson.

Voting for were June Conant, Elizabeth Weatherford, Judy Sumter, and Vern Presnell.

In what may be a new low for lot owner participation, there were only four of us in the audience.
