We have recently acquired an 8-month old dog that needs to be spayed and microchipped, and are looking for a good veterinarian - any recommendations? Thanks!

Some folks rave about East Hawaii vets, but we (and another friend of ours) had a bad experience there, so I can't personally recommend them. We now use Dr. Grune at Big Island Pet Care in HPP, and so far we like him.

We go to East Hawaii Vet. We were unable to get an appointment at Aloha when we needed one and they recommended EHV. That was about 5 years ago. They have cared for 2 litters, our 2 passed on cats, 1 passed on dog, and our current 6 dogs.

We used to go to East Hawaii Vets and switched to Aloha Vets which we like better.
At East Hawaii Vets there could be an hour or two wait before your appointment. Noone said sorry we are running late. This happened several times.
Then I read in the paper that they had six complaints from the EEOC for sexual harassment which were being investigated.
Aloha Vets are very prompt with seeing you and also very friendly.

I have been taking my pets to East Hawai’i for about 5 years and until very recently it’s been good, but within the last few months they’ve fired almost all the female employees and replaced them with men and the atmosphere has changed - suddenly all the front desk personnel and vet techs I knew are gone and it’s no longer a friendly or comfortable place to visit. I like and trust the vet I see there but the owner and the other vet both have been less than caring with my animals and in the case of the owner, unbelievably rude to me. Plus some of the remarks they made (to me) about the girls who were let go were wildly inappropriate and sounded like deliberate attempts to discredit them. So, I also am looking for a new vet. I live in HPP so will check out Dr. Grune as well as Aloha. The only reason I’ve stuck with East Hawai’i to this point is because they have lab and x-ray facilities as well as weekend hours and emergency coverage, all things that seem to be missing with the other vets I’ve checked. The reason I started with East Hawai’i in the first place was because they were willing to work my sick dog in same day when no one else would. I just want a vet who puts the animal’s welfare first. Will keep looking - any more recommendations?
blessed are the cracked for they let in the light

Our old mutt developed a terrible skin condition, and after visits to 2 different vets, trials of 6 different meds and we still nearly lost her, we were referred to Dr. Castro. In one visit he solved the problem. She is now fat and happy.
We highly recommend him!

I've had good experiences at Kilauea Vet Clinic in Kea'au. Dr. VersLuys has been practicing here for a long time - like 30 years I think - which counts for a lot with me because over the time I've been taking my cats there, she seemed to know a lot about what caused skin problems - specific pests and even the symptoms of poison stuff a local critter might get into. They are very busy there, but nice, polite and fair priced - I think. I have seen the same people working there over the years and I can tell they all really love animals.

Dr. Versluys is a good vet, although a friend's dog ended up with a broken jaw during a teeth cleaning when one of her techs was working on the dog instead of Seska (Dr. Versluys) (That's harder to spell than seska.) Then the dog's owner was charged full price to repair the damage the vet tech did so that was not a good experience and now my friend uses Dr. Skip Pease of All Pets Mobile in Hilo. He's in a small office over by the back entrance to WalMart. Not a fancy office, but he's very reasonably priced.
