A few pics snapped in Hilo and Pahoa. Just amazing clouds like ive never seen before in my life. Are they altocumulus lenticular?
I'm just seeing now that I only needed to share one of those links and it gives you all pics. Including the ones of the burnt Hawaiian Acres center from a different thread. Didn't know how to start a separate folder on tumblr.
Anyway if you snapped some please share. Just mind-blowing imo.

Yes, today was incredibly beautiful. I was in Hilo and everyone was out in the streets, pointing at the Mauna and the clouds and talking to each other.

Yes, they are lenticular clouds, caused by high winds interacting with the mountains.

Yes, the gusts have peaked at over 120 mph from time to time and the average speed has been 100-110 mph for the last day or so. The forecast is for the winds to continue for another couple of days, so you may see lenticular clouds again on Thursday and Friday.

In Hilo, the clouds looked like gigantic round UFOs. Reminded me of Close Encounters of the Third Kind space ship right over my head. I've never seen that before in my life.

They're not as rare here as you may think, we usually get some every winter, it's just that they either occur at night or when it's already cloudy and you can't see higher clouds. Yesterday it was beautifully clear with the perfect conditions to form lenticulars, so everybody had a chance to see them!
There have been some spectacular ones in the past, e.g.,

The cloud with the "vortex" could be seen from most of the island. It must have been huge and high up. Itʻs not often that the same cloud can be seen both from Waimea and Puna.
