Hawaii Tourism Cool Down Looms - good or bad?
#51
I thought you had made a mistake, rather than assuming you were intentionally being snarky. Should have known. And what happened to keeping it Hawaii?
Certainty will be the death of us.

He did make a mistake, somehow trying to equate the two actions.  Sorry bud, not a chance!

Durien Fiend - This is bound to hurt European travel to Hawaii, although those numbers are probably insignificant. It will be interesting to see if Canadians eschew Hawaii vacations next season as readily they are vowing to dump Florida and SW US as snow bird destinations.

Hawaii Tourism Authority has a useful breakdown for 2024 visitor arrival totals by country here. About 90,000 for Europe vs ~430,000 for Canada, ~720,000 for Japan, and ~7,300,000 for the US. No 2025 numbers for March yet, but across the US, there's been an alarming decline of around 12% overall, but higher declines of 17% from Western Europe including a 33% decline in arrivals from Germany. Hawaii's numbers are likely to be similarly impacted going forward IMO.

As for Canada, many of them have been quite vocal about cancelling their plans to visit Hawaii due to Trump's policies and rhetoric. Who can really blame them - elbows up!

https://www.hawaiitribune-herald.com/202...to-hawaii/
"A small sample of once-loyal Hawaii visitors from Canada have written to Gov. Josh Green and Hawaii tourism officials that they canceled their latest trips to the islands because of President Donald Trump’s comments and actions toward their country.

In announcing their breakup with Hawaii as a tourist destination — at least while Trump’s in office — Canadians essentially said:

It’s not you, Hawaii.

It’s your president and his disparaging comments about our country, his pledge to annex us as America’s 51st state and inexplicable attacks on your country’s largest trading partner through on-again, off-again tariffs that already have disrupted both economies and threaten to further increase costs for everyday staples for citizens of both of our nations." Arrivals from Canada have been trending down over the last several years and never recovered to 2019 levels.  In 2024, the total number of visitors from Canada to Hawaii was 433,049, representing an 8.8% drop from 2023 and a 19.8% decrease compared to pre-pandemic 2019 levels.  If you're pissed at Trump, it's more fun to say that than to admit that you can't afford to take your family to Hawaii because your country is run like North Korea.  #facts

LOL.  In my experience, when someone posts this word on FB it usually means BS will follow, or has preceded.

Facts are that Canadians are cancelling trips already booked,  Hawaii tourism officials are openly concerned, and the Canadian government doesn't resemble North Korea's in the least.

That last claim is really out there, Tang.  Canada exceeds US standards for health care, education and quality of life.  You know, the kind of things "working class" people are inclined to care about.

I’m not sure what you mean. Is it that Canadians vacation in Hawaii because Pyongyang is too much like everything going on around town in Vancouver? Or Toronto?

Tangy - Arrivals from Canada have been trending down over the last several years and never recovered to 2019 levels ... admit that you can't afford to take your family to Hawaii because your country is run like North Korea

As of 2024, I don't think any international market for Hawaii tourism recovered to 2019 levels: Canada -19.8%, Europe & others -17.5%, and Japan -54.3% (guess that means their country is run like Northern North Korea?) Now imagine another 12% or more down for those numbers... Make Hawaii Furlough Friday Again?

I did hear though that they're trying to fit more first-class passengers on the American overnight flights by stacking the beds. Unfortunately was debunked. ;)

That would help explain a lot - was waiting to see if Shrimp Jesus made an appearance, but that is probably way out of date AI slop. Zuck always be cooking - Hawaii doomsday compounds don't come cheap!

Good and Bad?

There is a veritable flood of rentals onto the market in Puna, right this moment, that are fully furnished and were clearly either vacay-rentals or people's getaways. Granted, sometimes those come on the market his time of year for the off season only but those are generally clearly marked and these do not appear to be those.

So maybe it's bad if you were hoping to cash in on that vacay-rental income stream or bop on down to the states, but it's really great if you are a local renter who benefits from the increase in rental inventory?

Sorry but I hope it helps Punatics who need shelter to find a great həʊs eh.
