Power outage
#1
The power has been out here in Central HPP for over 2 hours now. Neither I nor any of my neighbors have been able to reach helco by phone, and their app isn't showing anything. Does anyone have any information to share?

Hawaii Island outage update as of 2:45 p.m. HST on Thursday, Jan. 30, 2025: Crews are aware and responding to multiple storm-related outages across Hawaii Island, including in the areas of:

- Waiakea Uka
- Parts of Kaumana
- Keaau
- Mountain View/Kurtistown
- Hawaiian Paradise Park
- Pahoa
- Kapoho
- Volcano/Royal Hawaiian Estates
- Hawaiian Beaches
- South Kona/Capt Cook/Milolii
- Keauhou mauka on Hwy 180 to Honaunau
- South Point/Punaluu/Pahala

We are urging customers to prepare for the possibility of extended power outages due to a powerful storm system that is moving across the state.

Outages are being reported on all islands as strong winds and thunderstorms began early this morning. The number of customers and impacted areas are dynamic and will change as the storm makes its way across the island chain.

Depending on the storm’s ultimate path and intensity, damage to the electrical infrastructure could be extensive. Repairs could take longer, and in extreme cases require us to rebuild parts of our system. Flooding, fallen structures, debris and other obstacles also can affect the scope and speed of power restoration.

Immediately after the storm clears, we will send out teams to conduct damage assessments so we can estimate when repairs will be finished and power restored in each affected area.

If you see a downed power line, assume it is energized and dangerous. For emergencies call 911. For Hawaiian Electric, call our Hawaii Island Trouble Line: 808-969-6666. Please stay safe!

Mahalo for your continued patience and understanding.

4:00 pm Update: HECO reports a high volume of calls to the trouble call line and customer service center as well. Advising customers receiving a busy signal to try again or use their online report an outage form. They are aware of all the outages and we communicated a few areas not reported and working to address them at this time. Crews are working as quickly as possible to restore power to all affected customers.
Certainty will be the death of us.

https://bigislandnow.com/2025/01/30/upda...out-power/

Update at 3:36 p.m. Jan. 30: There were 34,034 homes and businesses without power at about 3:30 p.m. Thursday in Hawaiʻi County, according to FindEnergy.com, an independent organization with no utility or consumer advocacy influence.
That represents 38.35% of the total 88,757 customers — all of which are Hawaiian Electric customers — that the organization tracks on the Big Island.
I wish you all the best

The helco app on my phone finally started working, and it shows three separate outage locations in HPP. They list restoration times ranging from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.. Hopefully that will turn out to be the case. Edited to add: helco giveth and helco taketh away. They have now removed the estimated restoration times from all three of the outages in HPP. Why am I not surprised?

The power was out in the Acres (near E & 8) for several hours but seems to be back up as of the time I posted this. Thanks to the miracle of solar, my husband and I and of course Barney watched a re-run of Paul McCartney's surprise concert at Grand Central Station in New York City performed on September 7, 2018, for his "Egypt Station" album release, a concert my husband and I were fortunate enough to attend in person and actually be part of!

Look closely - you'll see us in this short 54 second clip!

And for a stormy Hawaii evening, assuming you have power and internet, you can watch the whole concert right here. (Even see Paul flub the lines during the song Blackbird)

Stay safe during this rare Hawaii storm!

We had solar until 7:30, then a big surge and internet went down and then solar! Solarʻs never gone off before. Battery had plenty of power. Everything came back on a few minutes ago. Weird.

The last time we had one of these outages somebody posted in one of the local FB groups that when the power went out their Tesla powerwall didn't come on, and several other people chimed in saying the same thing happened to them.  I never saw that anybody posted any closure to the issue.  I don't know if that's the same type of system you have but if so maybe something wasn't configured correctly.  There was another company (I want to say Samsung) where their units were defective and a bunch of people were getting warranty replacements, but I don't know how to test for that.  I think they were installed by Sunrun.

Power was out here in upper Orchidland but only for a few hours.
