I would strongly suggest you research this move and Punaweb is a great place to start. I learned so much before I moved here!
There are plenty of houses for rent and for sale in many subdivisions. Sounds like your life will mostly need to be near Hilo so decide the radial distance you are willing to look at with Hilo as the center of your circle. Gas is expensive and will get higher so your commute will be a very important consideration. That's just one thought. Hopefully others will join in and help you! I moved here 5 months ago today and love it. But I don't have kids now, I am not working (retired), not pressed to drive into Hilo so there is no commute pressure. I live near Pahoa,a small town with banks, stores, museum, gas stations, fast-food or restaurants, community center, medical facilities (in the future, a small ER is going to be built), churches, hardware stores, farmers market, and so on!

If you are planning to go to the University of Hawaii - Hilo, there is a one year state residency requirement, but it does have a good nursing program & the Pacific only pharmacology program. info:
