Raising meat for sale
#1
Does anyone know where I could find out about regulations regarding the sale of live animals for meat purposes?

I'm thinking of raising meat rabbits for myself to consume and was thinking of selling live rabbits for food to the public.

I've never raised any food for sale before so I don't even know where to start.

Hi dayna!

http://www.usda.gov/wps/portal/usda/usda...DIRECTIVES&parentnav=LAWS_REGS&navtype=RT

I think this will be a good start for you, it's definitely very broad but it should answer most of the questions which may arise as a result of your interesting new enterprise. Best of luck I can't wait to try some rabbit!

Basically it's just ruining someone else's fun, it's like when someone's making fun of you...do you let them laught "at" you or do you laugh along with them. Hope that helps. Hope your finding rabbit info too!

I found this article and it said this:

Rabbit meat offered for sale to the public does not require federal inspection. Information regarding voluntary federal inspection of rabbits and edible products thereof may be obtained from:

that article looks great dayna, i had the chance to read through it and it should be a great start with all the guidelines the provide like diet and habitat and butchering, but I do worry that since it is 30+ years old perhaps the rules regarding federal inspecting may differ - based upon the hordes of new legislation passed in the last decade or so chances are that restrictions have been put in place to deter small businesses and support the huge corporations which lobby for these vary laws ... I hope you find out and share but either way I bet the punishment for selling non-inspected rabbit meat is very severe!

try for something else...
Rabbits have a huge chance of helping destroy Hawaii's ecosystem when/if they go feral
ie like the pig, goat and cat
in last year, my neighbours f#@ken rabbit has killed over 30 of my rare endemic Loulu Palms (1-5 yr olds), not to mention dozens of other native and ornamental plants in my yard/pots.... this single rabbit has killed 10X more than any wild pig/rat/etc. (pigs will pull plants out of ground and nibble them a bit before moving on, but the plants usually dont die, a rabbit will chew the sucker all the way to the ground and 99% die)

save our indigenous and endemic Hawaiian Plants... learn about them, grow them, and plant them on your property, ....instead of all that invasive non-native garbage I see in most yards... aloha

: / poor palms. I've read about a "sauce" you can make to smear on your trees to keep feral animals from wrecking your stuff...

Here's a link banana,

Hi dayna, I don't know if you've checked out the forums at permies.con
But they have their own section for reading rabbits - thought you might be interested in reading up!
