I thought this was funny. Funny in its inaccuracy.

Well, in my opinion, the article was very simplistic. Also, who did they consider Hawaiian? The indigenous Hawaiians or all the immigrants who moved here or were relocated here? Diet is NOT that healthy here and if you throw in the cases of beer and hard liquor and over use of drugs, legal and illegal, well...seems the people here are pretty much in the same "boat" with others in America.
Talking story and family get-togethers are big here and I think that is what helps the locals live longer, however. Smile

It's because of all of the antioxidants found in Spam that neutralize the other poor diet choices.

I think you've got something there nana. I agree with the get togethers and talking story! I think having better familial and community ties is probably one of the main ways hawaiians are happier than other states.

Simplistic yes, but not that far off base. Life here is far more laid back and stress free than most of the mainland. Sure there are problems here like everywhere but no one is freezing to death and people here are generally in better physical health. I also can't speak for anyone else, but I always felt here that the problems in the "real" world are minimized. I've always felt a much higher stress level as soon as I land at a mainland airport. No smiles. And the importance of family also has a large influence. Older people are respected and held in high esteem rather than thrown away.
Maybe not for everyone but this is a good place to live.

I dare suggest that "less stress" is partly because being "homeless" is nowhere near as scary -- not only will you not freeze to death, you will probably be able to find food...

From a non-teabagger perspective, having health insurance doesn't help much if all the doctors are either too busy to see you or incompetent, which seems to be the general rule here.
