Example of what could happen in an emergency evacuation on the only road out of lower Puna.

in an emergency, you just drag the carnage off the road and proceed. no need to gather evedence.

If only there were an alternate route, or more lanes on 130... hahaha.

Five cars involved... Sounds like following too close to me. Doesn't matter how fast you drive down 130 someone is always riding your donkey. Glad I drive a big truck.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

I can see a problem happening heading to Hilo when someone pulls in to transfer station slowly or stops when that right morning lane is being used.....

The wreck must have happened right after I passed the transfer station this morning. It was pitch black and raining really hard, my wipers were on full blast and it was still hard to see. In spite of the road conditions, the car behind me was riding right on my bumper and 3 different drivers pulled in front of me and filled the gap that was my safe stopping distance. People really need to adjust their driving habits to the road conditions.

Nancy is right about the transfer station, people pull in and out of there every morning and do not pay attention to the fact that the right lane is a travel lane. They often don't even look to see if anyone is coming.

Not sure on the details - but didn't the county pave the top of ainaloa and road 9 as a emergency by pass. It's a long way around but that traffic was sitting there a long time.
Glad I was heading towards Pahoa

There's two alternate routes that I know of but ainaloa is the only one paved the whole way.

Wow, I got lucky. Left Hawaiian Beaches ocean front area around 10 am yesterday for my flight home. I hit about a half mile backup that was stop and go, then slow moving, then clear. I'm glad I didn't hit the five mile backup or I might have been running to the gate or missed the flight (had only a 67 minute layover between flights at HNL.

I'll make a separate post later about my week in Puna -- but we had a great time and thought everyone we came in contact with to be great and friendly. Perhaps we got luck, but in my 1000+ mile of driving over the week, had no crazies on the road.
