Ha, boy you got that right. I make "green smoothies" almost every day and shop for spinach. Safeway has 1lb for $8.00 which is horrific! My friends told me to grow spinach but I laughed because I go through 5lbs. each week and my space for gardening is limited. So when anyone makes a trip to Costco, I have them pick up a 5lb bag of fresh spinach for less than $5.00.
As for the other veggies and fruit, I buy at the Wednesday market in downtown Hilo. They also have produce on Saturday.
I am sure others will tune in to your post and give you locations of other markets. There are plenty.
I have noticed that whatever you buy at the market is roughly $2.00/lb with exceptions.

Both the Hilo Farmers Market (big ones on Wed. & Fri, but some vendors most days) and the Makuu Market (Sundays) accept EBT...

This website has the Farmers Markets around the Island ( it is slightly dated - some are not, & some have changed a little, but most info is still good):

best deal on carrots is when Safeway has 25#bags (we share with neighbors...)

also look at CostULess - they usually have some fruits &/or veggies that are near date & they are closing out - must use them up fast- but great prices

of course the best deals are with neighbors that have their harvest in...sharing is common here...but usually you have to share too...time, talent or fruit of your labors...

It does not take a lot to grow veggies here.... a few 1-5 gal pots (or CLEAN pails) will get you a bit of leafy greens... we have weed cherry tomatoes that take over a bunch of air/fence/leaning space, but grow in a smaller container...

Nana- have you looked into growing Moringa....a tree that has leaves mo'betta than spinach & easier to grow here (no worry of bolting or water sogging)

"FYI" anyone who has recently moved here, be aware of the Rat Lungworm parasite, if you are buying organic and locally grown produce, it is very important to wash thoroughly.

With all this wet weather, we will probably have larger infestation of slugs. (ugh) [Sad]

Prices at the grocery stores are very high, just watch for the weekly sale ads, plus in-store specials, that's when you will find the lowest prices, if the item is sold out, just ask for a raincheck.

Punaweb, is a good resource, and if you use the search link, you will find all kinds of information on many different topics!
If you have been following Punaweb for a while, you can see most posters are helpful, but at times it can get very snarky, just ignore![Big Grin]

Shock of shocks, my neighbors were telling me that WWOOFers can show up here for their vacation and immediately get an EBT card.

I like to think of EBT as a support for the local food supply. If all those people on EBT couldn't use that program for victuals, we'd just have other problems. Better to feed people than corporations. Just my opinion.
