RoundUP QuikPro Packets
#1
I'm finding this herbicide online, 5 packets for under $14. You mix each packet with 1 gallon water to make a gallon of herbicide spray. Has anyone tried this and had any success in Hawaii? Is it just as good as the liquid concentrate?

After using Round up once, I broke out in hives, and itched for days. I researched for an alternative nontoxic weed killer.
I have been using vinegar/soap for years.

Round up is so dangerous to your health and your animals too.

Here's a demonstration:

Here's the facts that Round Up, causes cancer and birth defects:The chemical at the heart of the planet’s most widely used herbicide -- Roundup weedkiller, used in farms and gardens across the U.S. -- is coming under more intense scrutiny following the release of a new report calling for a heightened regulatory response around its use.

Critics have argued for decades that glyphosate, the active ingredient in Roundup and other herbicides used around the globe, poses a serious threat to public health. Industry regulators, however, appear to have consistently overlooked their concerns.

Please heed the warning and stop using this toxic product.

The best value for herbicides is generally purchasing the concentrate. Looking online I found a gallon of 41% glyphosate at Sears for under $30. At 2-4 oz of concentrate per gallon you're looking at 32-64 gallons of mix instead of five gallons, or six to ten times the amount with the packets, for only twice the cost.

We've used glyphosate products for over twenty years and never had a skin or any other reaction to the product, but obviously care in its usage, like any material, is important and individual allergic reactions are always possible.

The studies cited in the HuffPost article were not peer reviewed and it was not clear that studies were not cherry picked for inclusion in the compilation. There did seem to be some ideology involved. One of the researchers cited even refused to make details of his analysis public!

Pete, mahalo for the tip. If 2-4 oz./per gallon works for you that's great. The label's recipe is 6 oz/per gallon, but I tend to go weaker too as it's less harmful when spraying near your shrubs and trees. I will check out Sears online shopping.

Yesterday, I've found that Farm Supply Cooperative has 2.5 gallon Honcho (41% glyph) for $60.

the liquid stuff is going to be far cheaper overall... I also use only 2-3 oz/gallon for the nonwoody weeds....

Ive been spraying the stuff for many years, at home and when I did County Park work in NorCal, all we used was glasses, rubber gloves and boots (unlike the full body suits and respirators used for insecticides)

Right now I use Honcho, also made by Monsanto but is 1/2 the price
It works well too... just saw an ad that JHara Store in upper Puna has the 2.5 gallon on sale for $75

the difference between Roundup Honcho etc. is they DO NOT contaminate the soil, unlike soap, oil, bleach, gasoline, etc., you can grow seedlings in same treated soil only days later...

The active ingredient that allows Roundup to kill weeds is glyphosphate--more significantly, the isopropylamine salt of glyphosphate. Glyphosphates work by interfering with the synthesis of the essential amino acids that are needed for the plant to grow. For plants to grow, they need the enzyme EPSP synthase. This enzyme helps synthesize the proteins tyrosine, tryptophan and phenylalanine. Once glyphosphate interrupts this enzyme and prevents it from working correctly, the plants can no longer build peptides. Without these peptides, a plant slowly browns and dies.

The 2oz/gal rate is for Roundup Pro Max which we use for its rainfast guarantee of 30 minutes, very useful around here. Supposed to have a smaller molecule for quicker absorption.
