Thinking that a simple roof is simple can be misleading. A roof on posts is kinda like an airplane wing. You will need some substantial design to keep it stable in the wind. Usually this is done by attaching to a house. No house structure to attach to? Then you have to engineer it to be stable.
I would suggest steel posts set rather deeply into concrete. The posts can be 3" diameter galvanized steel pipe.... comes in 21' lengths and is strong as well as durable. Wood is a waste of money.
Assume the best and ask questions.

In keeping with what Rob said... I built a permitted standalone roof, about 28X30, 3:12 pitch. it is supported by 9 pipes, 4 inch. they are 10 ft exposed, 5 ft in ground in 12 inches concrete, in a 3X3 array, 11 ft apart. They support 3 beams (4X10 X24') on which are 5 beams (4X10X24') on braced 4x4 posts to form the pitch. The roof is 2.5 inch panel from Castleblock. Don't remember the costs, but still remember the fun, especially the holes - both the digging and the filling

I am agreed with you. Nowadays, i am planning this project as well. However, it is a big problem for me.
