It is important to read the Hawaii use of force codes, the Hawaii CIVIL Castle law, if you plan on owning a Firearm in this state.

Police have a lower threshold than civilians for acceptable use of force. There will always be an investigation, but the DA will decline to prosecute.

If a regular citizen had done the exact same thing instead of a cop, the civilian would be sitting in jail 72 hours at least, and face attempted murder charges.

That demonstrates the inequity of Hawaii use of force law.

Shoot to wound is never taught to cops, because they have PBA reps, and a lower standard or use of force than civilians.

For a civilian in his home in Hawaii, Castle law only provides CIVIL liability protection, barring a home invader from filing a civil lawsuit. But the DA can file any criminal charge he/she wants.

If you can manage to get away with a shotgun blast at a home invaders foot and hobble instead of a lethal blast, it makes legal sense to do so, even though police are taught in every drill to: shoot until the target in no longer a threat" which is a politically correct way of saying shoot to kill. If you ask a cop, they will say they never shoot to wound or even train for that. Fell comfy now when the police knock on your door? The use of force laws need some improvement.

If the laws need to be tweaked, citizens need to try to change them legally. I suggest you read the code carefully.

If you read the current Hawaii civil Castle law, and the use of force codes, you will see a portion defining acceptable use of lethal force for police/public servant that is different than citizens.

Should it not be the same standard for a regular citizen as police?

Where we currently live we could leave our doors unlocked and be alright. Doesn't mean i EVER would. Not doing something as simple as locking your door leaves you and loved ones in a Terrible position if danger approaches. You wouldn't even get the warning noise of someone breaking in! I love hawaii and believe it to be one of the safest places in the country. I enjoy living here thoroughly, and have ALWAYS felt safe. But it is a VERY bad idea to let your guard down because you "feel" safe, or love hawaii. Criminals could care less about how you feel about hawaii. They are opportunists. And by keeping your doors unlocked, you have given them the ultimate opportunity. Im glad people are able to keep their car windows down, valuables in sight. But i don't think its very smart of them.
Its almost as if some people refuse to believe we live in a world where anything bad could happen, let alone to them. Locking their doors, or rolling up car windows, requires admission of this imperfect place that we live, and some people simply cannot accept this. You would NEVER leave your online banking info lying around carelessly because you feel safe in hawaii.
And thats just your money. So why on earth leave your doors unlocked and leave yourself open to possibly losing your life? Im a fantastic driver, and I also have great faith in my fellow drivers here in hawaii. VERY small chance of being killed on the roads.
BUT I STILL WEAR A SEATBELT JUST IN CASE!!
Its not about being paranoid. Its not about being scared. Its not about being violent, or a gun rights advocate.
Its about being PREPARED, and REALISTIC.
I am BOTH!

Don't tempt the weak is my motto. There are people out there whose moral compass is askew everywhere on the planet, not just Hawaii, so don't tempt those people through your actions.
