I have been thinking about getting into knife sharpening biz myself. Everyone on this island has dull blades of all kinds it seems.
Top grade sharpening gear is not at all cheap however.

If you do Costco runs there is usually a guy camped out in front of Costco who does sharpening. I don't know how good of a job he does. I keep intending to take my machetes in but I always forget them.

There must be a market out there. Good for you. Cheap I don't want...excellence for my professional cutlery I do want. Good luck to you.

Main thing to look for/ ask about is a rod controlled guide system for getting even bevels and edge polish angles. Hand stropping can't be as even as when the strop is guided by the rod. Depending on the strops and various pastes you use you can sharpen down to a half a micron.
The main drawback with the guide rod systems is that you HAVE to pay VERY close attention to what you are doing or you will cut off a finger. Don't blade sharpen with a guide rod system if you are sleepy and don't do too many blades in one sitting or your attention will waver then bye bye finger. I will post something here if I get into it on a professional level myself. |
