The State Dept. of Health Program Manager, Russell Takata, will be conducting free Radiation/Nuclear Awareness classes in Hilo and Kona. The class consists of training protocol fireman and police utilize at the Nevada Test site.

The Hilo class is set for Saturday, July 28th 8AM-1:30PM with radiation monitor equipment training from 1:30-3PM at the Environmental Health Office 1582 Kamehameha Ave.

The class is open to the public and has been scheduled due to citizen concern about possible military related radiation contamination on Hawaii Island from Pohakuloa live-fire training in the center of Hawaii Island.

The Kona offering of the Rad/Nuc Awareness class is scheduled on Saturday, August 11, 2007, 8:00 am 3:00 pm, at the King Kamehameha Hotel.

the military using DU on the Big Island? Nahhhh, they wouldn't do that. currently DU is the U.S.'s great gift to Iraq, it just keeps on giving.

No, of course they wouldn't... Just like they wouldn't dump radioactive waste off the coast of O`ahu... oh, wait, they did. It always strikes me as odd how the military says DU is safe, but then has a training video telling soldiers what to do if they come into accidental contact with it. I'm just glad that we live upwind of it. (sorry, Kona-side people... just don't breathe it in...)

I will bring back my glowing report, hopefully the water flowing or the air blowing is not glowing too much either...

Well... the training class was interesting, if nothing else. Saw some nasty photos of people who had radiation burns (one guy picked up some material and put it in his back pocket, burning a huge hole in his butt cheek!), saw some interesting videos of tests where they crashed radioactive containers into trucks, trains, even an F-4 jet... Russell Takata from DOH was very informative and very nice to come all the way from Honolulu to give the training.

On a related note, the Army's initial findings are YES, they are finding depleted uranium at Pohakuloa Training Area here on the Big Island. You don't want to be downwind of that stuff.

i see the "new beginning"governor of ours continues to side with the military on the du issue here in hawaii, upsetting alot of folks when she refused to let Dr. Pang accompany the army scientists taking readings of the sites. it didn't surprise me at all.
