Permitting an Unpermitted home?
#1
Hello all,

I was wondering if anyone has ever gone through the process of permitting an unpermitted home. I may be considering a very well built, but not permitted house. The only possibly problem I see is that the stairs are too steep. Anyhoo, any ideas?

Thanks

Simplest thing to start is to go down to the Building Department and talk to them. They will tell you what you will have to do.
Assume the best and ask questions.

Changes to the County electric code have made this very difficult and very expensive.

You need to bring the electric system up to current (2008) codes and get an electrical drawing stamped by an electrical engineer. Then it is up to the inspector as to whether or not you will need to open any walls for inspection.

There is also the issue of all of the structural connectors which are hidden by the siding and drywall. Shudder.
