Remember: if Ag-zoned, the noise limit is 70db, 24x7 -- as long as the pump is under 70db, no problem, prospective neighbors should have done their due diligence...

Grundfos are super quiet pumps. But they're expensive ($400-$500 for a 3/4 HP). Got it at Waterworks in Hilo. The pump before that was purchased at Home Depot. We call it the blue devil. It does the job just fine...but neighbors two houses down can hear it when it comes on

Yes, the Grundfos is a quite and reliable pump. Mine has been going great for 8 years now. Secret to long pump life is change the filters on a regular basis.

Birdmove, I looked up that pump that was in the laundry room. And yes, looks like it's an on demand pump. Which is fine, but if the demand in the house/yard exceeds what it can put out the pressure will drop. No big deal though I don't think.

That would be true of any pump though. The difference is in how the pumps handle demand of less than full capacity.

Kalakoa,
It isn't about zoning and legalisms, it is about being a good neighbor; if/when we replace the pump I want to get the quietest one I can find and afford. Macu'u222, that sounds like our pump. Carol

I realize that -- unfortunate point being, Ag zoning isn't necessarily consistent with "good neighbor", especially in high-density subdivisions... As far as practical suggestions ... I've often considered a small raised tank so that the toilet can be gravity-fed at night. Alternately, a separate small (possibly DC) pump just for flushing the toilet. The 1HP well/pool pumps are a bit of overkill unless you really need the extra draw capacity (smaller pumps "don't suck" -- pun intended).

I have a small DC pump that shakes the whole container.

Thanks everyone. And thanks, Dayna, for looking that up. The house we live in in HPP has a pressure tank, and an ancient pump, which is a Stayright (I believe that's it). I was told those are good old pumps.
