Hawaii County Noise Ordinance?
#31
A friend of mine had the same problem, noisy generator next door all day and night. called cops "nothing we can do" weeks with no sleep, asked neighbor to limit use to day time, did not work. offered to run a long extension cord from her house to noisy neighbor and split the electric bill.neighbor agreed. 2 weeks later, noisy neighbors house caught fire and burned down. neighbor moved on. cause of fire, overloaded electrical outlet.

Happy to report...lastnight around 10ish neighbors generator shut down. I didnt even need to play the islamic azan call to prayer (which I actually did look up and downloaded the longest one I could find).

I would rather they just had a ounce of courtesy and agreed to turn it off at a reasonable time instead of the police being called and all the drama.
If and for how long they continue to shut it down at a reasonable time Idk (itll probably last until they start getting nasty letters from the owners and county officials start showing up at their tarp door).

Supposedly they are "buying the lot" but thats what the last 3 people said also. I really dont know what the deal is with that lot but I know the last people were not awesome neighbors either. I just chalk it up to karma catching up to me for some of my younger days. Lol

Thank you to everyone that took the time to reply and offered your info and ideas.

Interesting that the state has an anti noise law regarding construction on Sunday.

State noise law prohibits construction on Sundays without an approved noise variance or unless it's related to emergency repairs of public utilities or damage caused by natural disasters.

I have read this post with interest trying to come up with a suggestion for you. I run a genny myself. Ours is hooked up to batteries. we run the genny for a couple of hours a day which tops up the charge they get from solar. Presumably these people do not have batteries? maybe donating those would be an answer? In answer to the speculation on what they might be doing all night, let me say this. Growers are notoriously paranoid and shy away from conflict and the possibility of police involvement. in addition, plants require a certain amount of darkness. 10, 12, 14 hrs?....i can't remember which, but quite a lot. So, i would assume that this is an ice problem. if that is so it will resolve itself soon enough. ice is the most destructive drug i have come across bar none. they have no hope of hanging on to what they have. i wish you well.

If that is what they are up to, the smell of it cooking will tip you off. Had neighbors that were into that thing, but a "series of unfortunate events" occurred. Be sure that side of your house is fire safe!

Keeping on track, I hope! Punalawaia, next time you are by County offices, get the property owners name from either tax records, or building records (zoning maps). Next time you come across "occupants" who "claim" to be buying, pop the question to them. If right, explain neighborhood "law" in a friendly manner. If not, keep cool, but explain the rules. Go inside, call in a "criminal trespass" complaint. Let the rest happen. If you can get ahold of absentee owner, get a "proxy enforcement" letter from him giving you the right to act as owner in his absence.
Birchi, you seem to be very aware of your surroundings, and more conscience of others actions to decide if your genset is offending anyone. If you are still nervous, talk in casual conversation when carousing the neighborhood to see if it offends. More than likely the answer will be more of the barking dog nuisance than your genset.
