I have called a few insurance companies in Hilo. So far none will cover Leilani Estates due to the lava zone. I have 6 more agencies to call, but would like input from anyone that does not mind sharing agent names/companies and or coverage costs for Leilani or HPP. What I have so far is about $1,100 a year for a $250k place in HPP. We are starting to look for a place in Leilani (first choice) and HPP (second). I was told that if you have a mortgage you have to have hurricane coverage which is about $620 of that $1,100. Appreciate any help.

HPIA (Hawaii Property Insurance Assocation) will insure properties up to $350,000 in Lava Zone 1 and I got my insurance through the brokerage of Hawaii Business Insurance in Hilo. My premium is $1,200 for a 2,500 sq.ft. new (one year old) house. If you can't find their phone number I will post it on Monday.

Not all mortgage companies require hurricane. One of my homes has hurricane coverage, the other does not.

Here in S. Fla I'm paying about $1,100.00 per month total for my house and guest house (which is mostly garage). That does, of course include hurricane coverage :\ Try and fit that into your budget!
