A Dangerous Situation
#1
Dangerous situations are developing as a result of the abandonment of regular road maintenance (mowing & tree clearing) along Kamaili Road from the top to the bottom, as well as the Red Road from Po'ohiki to at least the junction of Kamaili.
I have already witnessed the results of 1 accident on Kamaili rd - A local man ran into one of the fallen trees that was not cut back away from the edge of the highway after Iselle , and no road maintenance allowed 5 foot tall weeds and cane grass to cover up and hide the fallen tree that this poor fellow ran into. I have heard of another accident from this cause as well.
There are many shoulder areas along these roads that were considered safe and widely used when necessary ,that still have Iselle damage, (trees fallen & weeds hiding them) and more serious accidents
are likely if this situation is allowed to remain.
If the County wants to avoid potential lawsuits from tourists and anyone else unfamiliar with our roadways and the dangers that are hidden therein , they better jump on this ASAP.
Not to mention the possibility of "grievous" bodily harm inherit in this situation.

130 is pretty bad with encroaching cane grass as well.

I've been calling the Dept. of Public Works about every other month to ask that they cut the grass at the top of Maku'u so we can see if anybody is coming before we pull out onto the highway. Often, the grass is so high we can't see either way. Even the signs get covered with cane grass. They DO come every time I call, and things are ok for about 6 weeks. When I asked the (very nice girls who answer the phone) if they can just put us on a regular weed wacking schedule, I was told that they are "short staffed" and that we (the community) are their "eyes and ears". SO, I just call whenever the grass gets too high. I don't know who is responsible for your roads, but calling DPW has worked here.

Interesting.

Wouldn't this grass be at the corner of a State Highway and a "private" road, and therefore NOT County's responsbility?

Darn if their wasn't another incident just moments before I drove by - 2 cars were stopped at the spot mentioned , one with "emergency" blinkers on (black charger)and the other conferring with the first, who were standing around the front of the Charger pushing buttons on their phone.

Sorry if I was unclear Kalakoa. HPP (usually, sometimes?)cuts the grass on the top of Maku'u.
I ask the DPW to cut the grass ON the Highway at the top of Maku'u so we can see Pahoa/Kea'au way before pulling out onto the Highway. Enough people have died trying to get onto the highway, and I've found that having a good line of sight helps a lot when deciding if it's safe to get out of HPP.

Exactly; it's a perfect illustration of County's "spot jurisdiction", unless of course State has subcontracted County for maintenance of those shoulders.

If this is the most dangerous situation Mr. Bob has encountered, he leads a very, very protected life.

As fate would have it I have done a bit of driving today and just now I was coming up on Pohiki rd towards Pahoa , and while still on the Kings portion (still has Mango trees)and their was a gold Toyota doing a turn around in the middle of the road crossing over to the high grass shoulders and then backing back into the street to complete his turn, and as as I looked to my left I could see one of those trailer - bound, sprayers with a smaller reservoir tank -looked dented a little - the whole rig had obviously separated from the gold toy somehow or got whipped by a fast turn.
Oh parking on the right during this whole scene was a Humvee with a couple of NG's in it on the phone and the guy talking has a worried look on his face, making me think that the accident had involved then as well - although nothing with them appeared amiss and everyone was
collected with themselves
My POINT here is the roads are getting very narrow and accidents are happening so maybe you (anyone) will avoid a similar situation by going slower on these roads since they are markedly more dangerous this way
