Too often, this word is thrown around, "ALOHA".
Aloha this, aloha that, aloha when you don't mean it in a loving manner, aloha when it's good for the tourist, and more.
Just like the word "PONO". Too often used, with little meaning or substance. In our hale, the word was never spoken; we lived it.
The meaning of both words are very important to Hawai'i. ALOHA is the essence of our people, and our core. The na'au, as it were. Kupuna taught us the old ways, which cannot translate into English, or any other language. It is a part of us. ALL of us, should you choose to embrace the old ways.
This chant was one of the first learned in early years. (We went to school, then to hula, daily.) This one was taught to us keiki (at the time) by hula master, Aunty Iolani Luahine. It is the basic meaning of the word, "ALOHA".

ALOHA CHANT

LOKAHI A KULIKE
Unity to be expressed with Harmony
'OLU 'OLU KA MANA'O
Pleasant are your Thoughts
HA'AHA'A KOU KULANA
Humility to be expressed with Modesty
AHONUI A LANAKILA
Patience to be expressed with Perseverance
A-L-O-H-A
Knowledge and wisdom are found in Aloha. Aloha starts within ourselves. The key to ALOHA is to first apply it in our hearts, next our minds and the final step is to act on it. The Kahunas taught us that when the heart and mind are working together, that is when we are LIVING ALOHA. These are traits of character that express the charm, warmth and sincerity of Hawaii's people. It was the working philosophy of native Hawaiians and was presented as a gift to the people of Hawaii.
For what it's worth, to start our new year, with blessings upon all of us. Ke Akua Pu.
