pretending that Lower Puna is just an extension of suburban Hilo is BS

Unfortunately, County Code is "one-size-fits-all", even when that's clearly inappropriate.

Some would consider the local schools gems worth preserving for the benefit of the community. Give them back to the kids, but keep open the plans and options. Step up to life on an active volcano, go with the flow, embrace the change and opportunities, and learn to live with the lava, right? Smile

If only "the community" had an actual say in the matter...

It's got to be incredibly confusing and heart-crushing.

Hard to imagine any of them them doing well on the all-important mandated stadardized tests.

The refugee-camp-school in the parking-lot, the one without water or restrooms or library or playcourt, as necessary and wonderful as it's been in the interim, needs to be bid adieu. It served its purpose. Everyone is thankful that it was made available on the spur of the moment. And everyone understands that one day down the line it may indeed be needed again. But, yes, plans need to be made for a re-occupation.

Very well said! Is someone organizing a petition campaign to inform the DOE?

Who is the new superintendent for the complex? I know it was Mary Correa when this all started. Friendly former teacher, but no more than a talking head during the start of all the changes that took place last year. Not surprisingly, she was retired soon after. I know there's a replacement, just can't think of who that person is.

Yay! There should be a welcome back event/ceremony... Something formal that offers closure and such.
