Land Clearing North Glenwood
#1
Aloha,

My husband and I just purchased property on North Glenwood and we have some questions about clearing/dozing in that area. I have read lots about what is involved in clearing land that is on top of old lava flows but what is involved in clearing land with deeper soil? Is there more work involved to ready the land so that it is not so muddy? We are just looking to have a driveway put in with a clearing for a cabin but want to make sure we know what is involved before contacting someone to clear it for us... Thanks guys!

Have you walked the lot to see what's actually there?

as i stated in another post, if you live on dirt, you haul in rock, if you live on rock, you haul in dirt. i was up oshiro road for many year. deep soil. bring in equipment after a long dry spell only! big rock, then medium rock, then small rock, then road base. do you mean N. glenwood road? some large lava tubes up that way, but dozer drivers are aware and careful (usually). if you can get Moore excavating there you will be blessed.[Big Grin]

Hi Seeb, yea I have been to the property and know what is there. It definitely seems like there would be lots of mud if I just send a dozer in there...

Thanks for the details lquade... We were thinking that we needed to bring lots of rock in so that information helps. I am wondering though, you said there a large lava tubes on N Glenwood? I have actually heard the opposite...I have actually read here on punaweb that that side of Glenwood was much older and so most of the lava tubes had since collapsed. I know most of the N Glenwood area has not been covered in lava in almost 10,000 years. So now I am not sure if I should worry about lava tubes?

yeah, the famous lamont ranch had a huge tube. when dogs came and attacked pam's sheep, many ran down the tube. some were killed when they plunged to the bottom, some landed on a ledge. michael, bless his heart carried them up a 20 foot ladder from the ledge, the bottom was much much deeper. there are lots of tubes, just deep soil on top of many. my property on oshiro road, (same side) had a deep tube, which in the old days, they threw some dynamite down and then passed my cesspool in that. told me i never had to worry about it filling up. so yes, this is lava land and you always must be careful, just more covered up in glenwood. (we also own at 19 mile marker and have some tubes)

The tube at Pam's place was hidden too. It was in a thicket of trees and bushes. If you go to google maps and look above Glenwood where the road ends, you can see where there is a huge crater. Beyond that crater is a massive collapsed lave tube as well. I remember when Pam was working on her driveway. She was constantly pulling her jeep out with the tractor and any other car that went off the gravel drive. I think it was at least 10'-15' deep of just muck when it was wet.

Every time I think of Pam Lamont I smile. I loved her stories and I loved her. Anyone who knew her knows she was quite a force and so full of life and gusto. You were right to send blessings to Michael; he was like an angel to her and very helpful with the patience of Job!
I realize everybody has different adventures when building but it does seem that the Glenwood area provides a rich array of story telling material so please let us know how your adventure proceeds[Big Grin]

Does anyone have any idea of approximately how much it would cost to get an ~8500 sqft lot of mostly pine trees and undergrowth cleared off one of the lots shown at the bottom of the page here?
