Banana bunchy top virus
#1
It looks like we have our first case of banana bunchy top virus. The banana has always grown very slowly and we're wondering if it was infected when we bought it. But moving on... what do we do?

terracore, just be sure you read that correctly. when they say the entire bunch, they don't mean all your bananas in an area, they mean that banana and the keiki that came from that banana. just that clump. haul it away, don't leave any parts as mulch. i have done it where i wasn't sure. sometimes if you don't give enough fertilizer you can get those paddle shaped leaves. it isn't something you want in your yard, but so far i haven't seen it spread here up one road in the acres.

We had a clump of Williams bananas infected up here on Road 1.

also has good directions on dealing with infected plants. You can bag them and let them rot instead of spreading them to new places.

Where are you terracore? As others say, rip it out including every bit of the mat it's from. Sadly, no bananas are totally immune to BBTV. Some types may be resistant. What type of banana was it? Cavendish types like Williams are highly susceptible. Mats can be infected and be a source of future infection for other mats without having any symptoms. Calcium & boron deficiency and round up exposure can mimic BBTV symptoms but better safe than sorry so just rip it out and look for signs on others near it.

Terracore,

If you want to send in some samples to our lab we could test for you.

Let me know.
