Using a break down lane as a speed way is illegal. I am waiting for someone to get rear ended or worse when someone breaks down, pulls off the road into the "Breakdown Lane", and have someone flying down and bowling ball action.

Then it's a big sue job to the county or state or both. This huge money grab was not for 1.5 lanes... It was for .3 lanes. The other 3 lanes were already there, They just basically added a breakdown lane that can only get used for 3 hours out of the day.

TIP, if you ever do break down on that section, pull the car off the road, get out of car, jump the rail and wait for tow truck. If you must sit in car...Get your rabbit's foot out and rub it a few times and hope the tow truck gets there soon! Hopefully you got some flairs in the trunk!

But, of course you're right! It is a death trap! More will lose their lives, that's why I always move over to the right lane and hug the breakdown lane when it's not open. I wonder if you could just drive part way in the breakdown lane for safety reasons?

A couple of situations I've run into at the roundabout construction area. Drivers turning right in front of me turning left onto Kahakai, or right off of Kahakai. I once barely stopped in time to avoid hitting a Tacoma that made a left right in front of me. An accident at that intersection would make a big mess of traffic. Be patient!

I have also seen makai traffic on Kahakai backed up by drivers waiting to turn left into the Longs complex as drivers stopped at the traffic light were blocking all the driverways. Once the backup went around the corner onto PVR. Please don't block the driveways.

I think you're missing the point. Have you ever called a stranger a moron to their face at a dinner party?

I was driving back from Hilo the other day and someone was broke down in the shoulder lane.
Their door was open into the main lane and a woman was just standing there with her back to oncoming traffic. Jeez! How clueless can you be?
Hawaii Island drivers should be required to take defensive driving class.
Especially the foreign ones from Micronesia and other pacific islands.
One Thing I can always be sure of is that things will never go as expected.

If you travel on a jet, you are a 1/4-inch fuselage thickness away from instant death.

We got what we got, sounds like it took over 10 years just to get Phase I of the shoulder expansion completed, 8 years in planning and committees. All you can do is watch out for the other guy, use the right lane as the slow lane. And be prepared for insanity at a split second's notice. The yellow line is only a barrier to those conscious of it.
