I want to build a big lanai floor with a solid 3/4" plywood floor on top of... ? Someone suggested old tires with 2x4's screwed works well because it gives just a little and feels good on the feet - Kalani's floor is like that.
Someone else suggested hardwood pallets make a good cheap base and lasts pretty long too if they are hardwood.
Where would I get old tires? Or used pallets?
Other ideas for a good base?

I would put the plywood on top of a deck frame. A lot easier to level than tires or pallets and can take the weight if you later want to enclose it and turn the lanai into an Ohana or something.

Long-lasting is not how I would describe pallets. Quite the opposite in fact.

Yeah pallets literally dissolve in this climate very quickly unless you can keep them dry. I made a goat shed out of them and they are doing well even unpainted / untreated but they are protected by the roof and not sitting on the ground. A pallet on the ground or in the rain does not last long here. They also attract a lot of slugs. I'm not sure if they are eating the pallet wood or just sliming it but the end result is the same. Also for some reason fire ants LOVE pallets.

Dirt + Wood = Rot. You want post and pier. Build it right, it will outlast you!
