My wife and I are lifelong wave riders, me from Oahu, she from Maui. We are at Pohoiki 3 or 4 times a week and love the place. I asked a longtime resident surfer who was the most influential surfer in recent history. Boogie Kalama.
Amongst his many contributions was a surf contest at Pohoiki. This year it is back. March 18,19, & 20. is should be a great three days. Menehune, kane and wahine Open division, kupuna, alai'a, bully boards (the latter two provided), plus music, food, and especially Sunday, makahiki games for all. Even a bamboo pole fishing tournament.
Everyone is welcome. $30 per division, $40 beach entry. Honor and pay respect to George "Boogie" Kalama. Aloha.
