Island Air announces service to Kona
#1
5 flights a day to Honolulu starting in June starting at $69.00 one way. So Hilo is left out of the loop again?

Adding Kona service is a prerequisite to adding Hilo service. When they had a full Big Island presence before it included Hilo-Kona service. I believe the rate was $29 each way.

They used to have the $29.00 flt from Kona to Hilo too and it departed 1 hour after a Delta non stop from Salt Lake City to Kona !

Those were the days !!!

Well there is almost a $60.00 difference in round-trip travel to Honolulu from both Hilo and Kona. Hawaiian matched Island airlines fares out of Kona. And even accounting for gas...your saving about $40.00 per person flying out of Kona round-trip to Honolulu. I guess it just comes down to whether your willing to drive to Kona to save some money. I would since my wife and I always travel together.

but if you drive to Kona, what do you do with your car?
In Hilo, I can get someone to drop me off.
In Kona, I suppose I'd have to pay to park, which cuts into the savings significantly.

Maybe coerce a neighbor who is going on a Costco trip with some gas dollars?

For us..it wouldn't make a difference. We park at the airport whether in Hilo or Kona. But trips to Honolulu for us are usually no more than 1 night with day trips the majority of the time to save on hotel costs.
