Burning of slash???
#1
We have some slash after clearing our house site, and selective cutting of some leaning ohia trees and we were wondering if it's OK to burn on the property (a 1-acre site in Eden Roc). I've never seen fires here on the Big Island, but David says it's very common in the Caribbean. We don't have a truck to cart this green waste to the dump or a chipper/shredder, so we were wondering if this is a viable option on a one-time basis.

Rumi,

You can do a small burn pile, but there are requirements -- size of the pile (very small), diameter of the slash, whether its a no-burn day and distance from other homes or structures which may be difficult on a 1 acre piece.

You can contact the county environmental health department for rules. They are just down the street from Ken's House of Pancakes towards town. We found them to be helpful. If you're and agriculture business, then you can apply for an ag burning permit for a small fee per year.
