Gay teens in Puna

Check with the schools. In the past 2 friends of mine have headed after school support programs for gay teens. One at Pahoa and the other Keaau. Perhaps you could ask if these programs still exist and ask to speak with the counselor holding the meetings to get some insight into how gay friendly are the schools.
