When I was at the flow a few weeks ago, the boat that was out there was so close it nearly got hit by some of the exploding spatter from the firehose. 300 yards seems pretty far (probably extra to cover potential bench collapse), but the boat operators brought this on themselves.

This now appears to be official. The Coast Guard is "enforcing" a 300-meter exclusion zone around the lava's ocean entry point. It will last until late September.

The government has every right to be involved in protecting visitors from deceptive businesses driven more by profit than customer safety. Other than being knocked down and broken by a set wave, pushed onto the reef and Run out of fuel on the way back from the flow; only a few back injuries have occurred.(all incidents took place in advisory level seas and are documented by the Fire Department Ocean Safety Division).
So when a boat finally does come under a rain of hot debris, or visitors pass out from toxic gas exposure, the same people that complain about the "Nanny State" will be expecting our government's first responders to expose themselves to danger in the rescue operation.
Please!
