I cannot remember dancers wearing them in the years I have gone (could be that they do, but I am looking at soo much more, that I have not noticed glasses).
I am pretty sure there is no official ban on prescription lenses, as kumu Mark Keali‘i Ho‘omalu wears dark glasses onstage during the Academy of Hawai`ian Arts insanely popular hula Kahiko presentations...

As Carey said, I don't remember dancers wearing glasses either. They may not be specifically prohibited, but fall under judges criteria #9: 9. Authenticity of Costume – should reflect the period or time of the chant or mele. Solid black in both the kahiko or auana is prohibited not unless trimmed with contrasting colors. Cellophane skirts are also prohibited. http://www.k5thehometeam.com/story/12266...g-criteria Edited to add: Maybe contact lens are the corrective lens of choice among hula participants?

Authenticity would allow many kahiko & all `auana dancers to perform with spectacles (early 1800 there were spectales....so I am more inclined to go with your ETA comment...
It is probably easier to dance with contact lenses, I know decades ago it was easier to do gymnastics, glasses would just fly off! OK, so now I am really curious why pandp put this question out on the "Events" page... |
