metal roof over shingles
#1
I was wondering, I built my house about 6 years ago. We were thinking of spending 500 bucks in reflectix radiant heat barrier.

But, with the new "cool" roofs out there, and we are thinking, our roof is only single layer now, but the hawaiian sun is really taking a beating on it, not to mention the shingles are turning a darker color absorbing more sun energy. Would it be better to invest that 500 bucks in metal roof that is going to give a better "radiant' barrier than reflectix plus, I was thinking, if we put 2x4's under the metal to raise it up off the shingles for a 1.5" air gap from the hot metal to the shingled roof, would stay even cooler?

Anyone done it? Stay cooler? Thinking of WHITE (the most reflective) roof we can get.

It doesn't sound like a bad idea until I think about hurricanes or lesser wind storms.

Better get the heavy gauge stuff to prevent denting if you ever have walk on it.

Also maybe rat proof the ends so they, and other undesirables including bugs don't have a safe nesting area. Vent the ridge as well and you're good.

Yeah, I would definitely strap in the 2x4's into the existing 2x6 rafters.

Thanks for the replys. Trying to stay cool here.
