Question about addresses in Hawaiian acres
#1
Hello, my husband and I recently purchased 3 acres and the lot only has a TMK #. Can anyone tell me how to acquire an address for the lot? Thanks!

Call the County. They will assign an address to it.

Think they only give an address when you get a building permit

So do the majority of unpermitted houses in the acres just go without an address? And what about mail/packages? Just a P.O. box?

You can get one without a permit, just need to call the planning department! Each lot in HA has 3 even or odd sequential addresses to choose from, depending where your driveway is within the 150 foot width. Just pull up the TMK map and use the neighboring addresses as a guide:

As to mail and packages:

Only UPS and FEDEX will deliver to HA addresses.

For USPS, you can use (for Kurtistown):
Code:
Your name
General Delivery
Kurtistown, HI 96760
until you get a box (likely over a year wait). You do qualify for a free box since USPS doesn't deliver within HA.

When you get a box:
Code:
Your name
16-1234 Physical Addr
PO Box 555123
Kurtistown, HI 96760

With that format you can give one address to Amazon etc and it will either come to your house or your box depending on shipper.

You can also use the *post office* street address and box number to have all packages come to the post office (even Fedex/UPS) but they prefer you are paying for your USPS box to use that service.

Thanks for the suggestion about getting an address without a building permit. I did notice that the lot next to the one purchased had a building permit and an address. I'll try contacting the planning department to see if I can get our address.

fyi, if you have probs with someone like a credit card company not wanting to send a CC to a PO Box... just show them the Puna wiki page and explain that thats the only way we get mail here in Puna.. 2 main ways.... go to PO w/ a box, or a General Delivery (name). Ive had to do it with a few diff places that wont send things to PO Boxes...
