NBC= Nuclear, biological, chemical. It's the agents the filter is designed to filter out. How long they last depends on how much of the agents they are neutralizing. I understand its recommended to replace them every 8 hours. Much less time in high contamination, much more time in low contamination.

NBC filters are also called CBRN filters (Chemical, biological, radiological/nuclear).
