Map of Volcano Park + activity
#1
I know somebody must have a nice map printed commercially, that I'd have to pay for, but I just tried the Park site, to see if the explosion happened where I drove and made stops (along the circle drive). When I was there, I was looking and not trying to memorize Hawaiian words. (I know Haggar, Thurston, Iki - where I entered the trail and exited far away, had to walk back to the parking lot along the circle road) The Adobe pic is too small to read details on my computer screen.
There was a place on the southern edge of the main crater where I photographed one of those seabirds zooming out of the depths. You could see the layers of the rock, too where a large crack had split open.
It sounds like the drive down to the ocean is still closed (Chain of Craters Rd.) and now, part of the circle, too.
Even a crude sketch would help orient a former visitor, please? Where is this military camp and the L named smoker hole?

Hi, morganlady.

I'm not sure which park maps you are looking at that are too small, but the park site as a good summit map: http://www.nps.gov/havo/planyourvisit/up...summit.pdf

The explosion occurred near the base of Halema'uma'u crater (see map), below the overlook platform, with debris falling within the crater as well as at the overlook, parking lot and Crater Rim Drive (the circle road you referred to). USGS as good pictures: http://hvo.wr.usgs.gov/kilauea/update/images.html

Sounds like you were taking pictures of the tropic birds that nest in Halema'uma'u. You may have been in the Halema'uma'u parking lot or at the pullover labeled Southwest Rift (which has a big crack).

Chain of Craters Road (the road to the coast) is open. Crater Rim Drive is closed between the military camp (which is between Steam Vents and Kilauea Overlook) and Chain of Craters Road. Jaggar Museum is closed.
