Anyone want some free ducks?
#1
Hello everyone, we have 5 female and one male muscavoy ducks to get rid of, the wife is just over them(too much poo) Sad. They are only 8 months old, should be ready to lay anytime now. The male may have wry neck? Not positive it’s wry because when he was young he got accidentally stepped on while trying to corral them in their coop, possibly damaging the neck structure? Other than that they are healthy and wings are clipped.

Put them on the FREE category on Craig's List.

Not sure if you're okay with it Mikites but duck might make a nice Christmas dinner instead of buying a frozen turkey or ham.

Backing up what EW said, muscovy duck flavor and texture is closer to goose than duck. Blindfolded, one could be fed muscovy duck or beef and be unable to tell which is which. It even smells like beef when getting grilled on the BBQ. Unfortunately, they are nearly impossible to pluck so there is a lot of labor involved if you are looking to keep the skin.

ducks are actually really great pest control, especially against snails.

Unlike Terracore, I've never had a problem plucking a muscovy duck. Dipping them in 150-170F slightly soapy water for 15-45 seconds loosens the feathers and they come right off - older birds generally take a bit more time in the bath. If you slaughter at the wrong time you'll end up with a lot of pin feathers which can be a pain so check before butchering. Dry plucking is a huge pain in the butt and only undertaken if you want to spend an hour plucking one duck.

IMO older birds taste much better and more like beef than the young birds.

Maybe our water wasn't hot enough. We usually aim for about 155 as that seems the best range for chickens. We even tried an old school technique using wax.
