How to save on gasoline expenses-tips
#11
Yes, I have tried it from Waimea down to Kawaihae and its just too steep and twisty. I actually have to downshift from Drive to 3rd in my automatic. Hwy 11 from Volcano to Hilo is much better suited because its a more gradual descent and a far straighter road. You definitely have to pick and choose where you do it.

Best way I've found to save on gasoline expenses: stay out of the car.

..that was just cheek Wink

Should anyone have that archive access, one would find in the Honolulu newspapers from late 1973 many, many tips on how to cut back using fuel.

btw: in addition to local newspapers encouraging folks to drive less, keep those spark plugs clean, etc., on the national level, in October 1973, the USA came within hours of taking Arab oil fields by military force, and as close to nuclear war to do so and/or assure the survival of Israel against being over run by Egypt and Syria.
... I digress. Look at the newspapers, 1973.

Coaster's paradise ... the Saddle Road down to Hilo town.

22 Miles non-stop 'free' with only one section where you fall about 5mph below the 'speed limit' before pick bak up sans internal combustion.

Coaster edicate ( IMO ) if cars are behind you, please do at least the speed limit, or pull over with a signal.

The year: 1974.
The vehicle: 1950 Dodge truck, flat-head, six-cylinder, three-speed manual shift.
From just outside of Pahoa all the way to Kaimu Beach. Neutral gear. Ignition off (no power steering, now sweat).
Tour buses pass on the way down to Kalapana to disgorge passengers for quick Polaroid shot of the black sand beach (peel off photo, toss trash on ground, get back on bus with trophy photo) and then I meet them coming back up before I even finish coasting all the way down the hill!

...in the day...
